I can answer a couple of things here: 1). >>"Version 4.0 brings together the functions of Version 3 Standard Edition and >>Enterprise Edition into a single product." >>http://www-4.ibm.com/software/webservers/appserv/about.html This excerpt is from an annoucement for OS/390 (zSeries). Their 4.0 version is not the same as the follow-on release to v3.5 currently being worked on for platforms such as NT, AIX, Solaris, Linux, iSeries, etc. It fairly clearly states that it is providing v3 Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition (component broker, etc) in a single product. 2). Your second link is more pertinent to the iSeries. Unfortunately, there is not much I can say at this point. To the best of my understanding, until the formal announce of the product is done I cannot speak of prices or firm dates (and at that point you will know all). Sorry to cop out. If I am told otherwise, I will post back. Two posts on the IBM site have us wondering about the future of WebSphere for the iSeries 400. "Version 4.0 brings together the functions of Version 3 Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition into a single product." http://www-4.ibm.com/software/webservers/appserv/about.html "WebSphere Application Server, V4.0 - available beginning June 30, for $8,000 (single server) $12,000 (multi-server)" http://www-4.ibm.com/software/webservers/appserv/pr_version4.html Given these two statements, it would seem to indicate that there will no longer be a free version of WebSphere for the iSeries. Over at Midrange Computing, David Abramowitz brought up the point that WebSphere Development Studio contains the standard edition of WebSphere, and also contains SEU, PDM, et al on V5R1. If you are on software subscription for these tools, do you get WebSphere 4.0? There are a few options I see: 1. WebSphere 4.0 will be part of base OS/400 (thus giving the AS/400 a decided edge over other servers with a perceived $8000 per CPU bonus). 2. Some sort of watered-down WebSphere 4.0 (a "Standard Edition" not available on other machines) will be made part of the base package. This sort of defeats the cross-platform aspects, but still makes the AS/400 an attractive non-EJB server. 3. WebSphere 4.0 will not be supported except as an additional price LPP. Maybe V3.5 will be shipped, but no longer enhanced. 4. IBM ships a free "developer's edition" of WebSphere 4.0. This is probably some sort of session-limited version, which means you can develop but not stress-test your applications. Perhaps this is what will be available in the base OS/400. I'd be interested to hear what IBM has to say about all this. +--- | This is the JAVA/400 Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to JAVA400-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to JAVA400-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to JAVA400-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner: joe@zappie.net +--- +--- | This is the JAVA/400 Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to JAVA400-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to JAVA400-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to JAVA400-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner: joe@zappie.net +---
