JDBC support is there and comparable, but the SQL functions are not the
same. The version you call PC or UNIX is actually UDB, preferably V7.1. The
400 version is UDB wannabe. The three flavors are 400, 390 and UDB. UDB runs
on everything but the 400 and the 390 and comes from Toronto. The 400 comes
from Rochester and the 390 (I think) still comes from Santa Theresa.

The primary difference (at least as of V4R5) is that the UDB version
supports grouping sets, cube and rollup functions, while the 400 does not.
The LOB support is more robust and functional (at least IMO) than the 400.

As for performance, I have not tracked the changes for JDBC, but in the
beginning they all went through ODBC to get there. (Read that CLI.) I seem
to recall hearing that the current UDB driver for JDBC no longer goes
through ODBC. I have not followed the JDBC driver for the 400, but I would
assume that it still goes through ODBC.

I (as JT might point out) could be wrong.

I can't currently speak about the 390 functions, but that may change soon...
