Joe, I am not a newbie to O-O, Java (or, for that matter, C++). I think there should be room on this list for newbie questions. Or, at any rate, somewhere to go after one completes "Java for RPG Programmers." Call it Java 201. Or, maybe 301. In addition, I would myself rate the String discussion as beyond the newbie stage, especially if one is making the transition from just about any language but C, C++, or Smalltalk. In my opinion, it is a tricky little question that a regular O-O course, and even some experience in O-O and Java wouldn't necessarily cover _clearly_. No course can cover everything; this is just the sort of little detail that can fall into the cracks, to be settled by some combination of experience and discussion amongst like-minded friends. The concept of "null" generally is kind of foreign to those of us who don't routinely have data bases with null fields in them and like things. Pointers are another matter, but unless one came from one of the languages listed above, I don't think that prior languages, including RPG IV, grounds one with a real good intuition of "null" prior to Java. It's just the sort of discussion that I would hope we could agree belongs here in addition to what you would like to see. Larry W.
