Here is a translation of the two statements (not exactly good syntax, but logicall) a[i=i+1] = a[i+1]+1; //note that there is only 1 '=' within the brackets, so 'i' is incremented once permanently, and once temporarily a[i=i+1] = a[i=i+1]+1; //note that 'i' is actually incremented twice permanently. Assume i=2 and a[3] = 10 going into this... we get: a[i=2+1]=a[2+1]+1; //a[3]=11 and i=3; a[i=3+1]=a[i=2+1]+1; //a[3]=10 and i=4; a[4] may be out of bounds if you are lucky....
