To illustrate the difference, if i=1, the first example would be equivalent
to:

a[2] = a[2] + 1

in the second example, the expression would be equivalent to:

a[2] = a[3] + 1

due to the fact that 'i' has already been incremented by one by the first
increment operation.

Please, please, someone please help me understand why this two expressions
are not equivalent:

a[i++]++
a[i++]=a[i++] + 1;

The books I have only state they are not equivalent, I am suppose to guess
the rest, but I don't find it trivial.
