Sure, I do applications mostly, since I have been using Java as a replacement for C in my own projects. Just don't extend the applet class but include a "main {}" method that controls processing. You run it from a command line by running the jvm and passing the class as a param. ie "java MyClass". You need to have the JDK, though and install the JVM.
