There are significant differences between the COBOL dialects on the mainframe and on the "i" - has to be, since the mainframe has (for example) no concept of an externally described file. RPG is close enough to COBOL in most ways to make it a relatively trivial task as I'm sure you must realize.

This is a very long standing requirement going back to when CSP was ported to the (then) AS/400. At that time we asked for RPG generation as in those days having to buy the extra COBOL compiler was a major inhibitor to adoption of CSP. The same issue was subsequently a major inhibitor in the adoption of VA Generator. They always rejected the request - the excuse changes every time.

Do I care - like you - No. But I do think that it affects people's willingness to consider the tool.
