I realize that most of my posts are about 85 degrees west of what everyone
is talking about on any given topic...but what the heck...

This whole wal-mart topic is really funny to me because I was just reading
an article a couple of days ago from the December 1938 Readers Digest (page
83) titled "Pro & Con: Shall We Curb the Chain Stores" and it was a
point/counter point about how chain stores of that time were knocking out
all the little guys and forcing prices so low that a mom and pop store could
not stay in business, or the opposite point, about how the chains encouraged
community growth and offered better prices and better variety, etc.. It's
really pretty funny because if you didn't know you were reading a 67 year
old article, you'd think you were reading about Wal-Mart today.

Truly, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Consumer driven? i think the reverseis going on at WalMArt. If (as is the
case in my area)
so many are out of work or had to take lesser paying jobs due to plant
closings,
then all they can afford is Walmart. Driving down wages is expanding the
class
of people that can only afford cheap products. I think it's only a myth that
consumers "drive" the movement of big corporations. We are being herded like

cattle.
I worked on some plumbing this weekend. I would "like" to buy parts that
will last
more than a few years. All the "big stores" sell cheaper (and less reliable)

parts.
The better plumbing stores have been driven out. I have "no choice...." and
can only
buy what they put on the shelf. This is not consumer driven retail, it is
corporate
mass purchasing (and drive your supplier to reduce cost) driven.
