I want the editor to indent for me. Other editors do it. Code
should too.
If I have
if a = b ;
c = d ;
endif;
and I wrap some more code around it
if x > y ;
z =q ;
if a = b ;
c = d ;
endif ;
endif ;
I'd like the editor to straighten it out for me to
if x > y ;
z =q ;
if a = b ;
c = d ;
endif ;
endif ;
If the editor can do it, why should I?
Of course, it would also be nice to redo the indentation if you
didn't like how the previous guy did it. Or if he made a right
dog's breakfast out of it.
I'm not knocking free format. I just want editor added structure
in it. Look at a Cobol program, which is free format. How often
isn't the code in the correct structure?

Just curious...What purpose would indent fill in free-form format?
To me the ability to indent your control structures from within
your code is one of the (if not THE) biggest advantages of using
free format. The indent function of CODE would be superfluous in
this case.
