I am not very sure.  I tried with settings 1 min/1 change and I found that
the memory did increase for every save. However, after let it sit for a
while the memory dropped. I need to look into it more.

Autosave involves macro call, I think. If what I have observed is true,
then that means if you have ten files opened, then for every 12 seconds you
might have 4K more used up.

Currently, we are working on solving this highlight line problem, and will
see if we can have a similar improvement for this autosave problem if it is
true.
For now, please try to increase you autosave time setting to see if it
helps a bit.
