The internet version said I was at sp3, then I dl'ed the shebang and the
installer reinstalled sp3.

How did you do the download?  Did you download the whole service pack or use
the Internet Installer option (that is the one I tried).

I am also using Win2K so a difference in OS is not the answer.

  Time and testing will
tell if it works.  I'm running Win2K and I executed the DOS, editor and
daemon shutdown commands before running the install just to be safe.
