There might be a little confusion that switching to TCP/IP means not using STRCODE. You can use TCP/IP communications in 2 ways. One is the way you are doing now. By defining a TCP/IP server, you do not have to bother with starting an emulation window and tying it up with STRCODE. It is convenient and sufficient for most things, such as load, save and compile. Under the covers a batch job services all these requests. However if you want to prompt CL you need an emulation window. In this case you need to reserve an interactive job in an emulator by running STRCODE. If you prompt STRCODE you will see that you can also specify *TCPIP as the communication type. I hope this clarifies things. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edmund Reinhardt, AS/400 AD Tools, reinhard@ca.ibm.com Dept 607, IBM Canada Lab TL 778-4392 Phone 448-4392 esimpson@ca.ibm.com on 04/26/2000 07:16:27 AM Please respond to CODE400-L@midrange.com To: CODE400-L@midrange.com cc: Subject: RE: Communication types in Code/400 Eric, What Dave said about STRCODE being required for prompting CL is correct. The CODE Designer handles DSPF, PRTF, and PF files. It does not handle logical files. I'm using STRCODE from a 5250 session, though - prompting won't work if you use the other method, since that runs in a batch job on the /400 rather than an interactive one. I haven't tried Code Designer on database files yet. I knew that it is supposed to work for physicals, but I don't recall seeing anywhere that it works for logicals.
