I tested out the setting on the in_null_map logic using a file which has
known NULL capable fields. I updated the file with the in_null_map set
using the same code I had developed for the journal entry test and it worked
flawlessly, so I am now thinking the API is in question. Thanks for all your
advice and comments, hopefully IBM will be able to let me know why it's not
working as it is documented?

Your sample code does not have a coma separating them but IBMs example
in the manual does? I thought maybe the open parms are not being set
correctly at first but having changed to both formats with same result
seems to bounce that idea? Just for future reference really.
I have only ever coded the options parameter without a comma. (I only know
these APIs as a user. I don't have any inside knowledge about them.)
