Don,
The methods described in prior responses are great solutions using std BPCS PUR functionality. There was also an add-on product available at V4 call Repetitive Supplier Scheduling (RSS). The functionaliy in RSS has been built into the std BPCS PUR product at newer releases. If you have the RSS product, it handles Contract / Blanket Orders. I am not technical - but you can probably tell if you have RSS as it should be a separate selection from the PUR menu referred to as Supplier Schedules (Menu SSARSS). Basically, this functionality allows you to set up a Contract and associate a PO to the contract. You can use the releasing capability in RSS (similar to PUR640) to release new lines on the Contract PO. The Contract itself would hold the 'Blanket' quantity. MPS/MRP only recognizes the released lines on the PO - not the contract. I'll stop here since if you don't have the RSS product, this won't help you. If you do, let me know or feel free to contact me off-line for further info. I am using this functionality at a V4 client as we speak.

We may have missed or misunderstood something, but is there any way to effectively use BLANKET P.O.'s?
For example, we want to create one P.O. # (we refer to it as a blanket P.O.) for say 500, but only create 1 release line, for a specific date, at a time. Say we release 50 for November 1st, but don't want to release/order any more just yet, and we are not SURE of the next date we will want more of this part#. So, we want to leave the P.O. open, but show an OPEN balance of 450.
TIA
