Al's points are correct with the excpetion of different item classes by 
facility.  An Item can only have one item class desigination.

   If you use different facilities, the same item can have different item
   class & MRP rules by facility.  You do have to be careful to have physical
   locations properly labeled, and a tested mechanism if you ever need to
   "borrow".  For example we have items that we can manufacture or purchase
   ... lead times and costs are a bit different ... our trade-off is ... get
   it right away but pay more  We have several facilities in the same
   building.  If you transfer item across facilities, it drags its cost
   structure with it, obliterating last cost story on the target, which can
   mess up traceability of cost of sales.
