Ok - it's early folks. My response brought you BEYOND soft deleted records to purging files. Sorry. -----Original Message----- From: bpcs-l-bounces+ssegerstrom=intermatic.com@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:bpcs-l-bounces+ssegerstrom=intermatic.com@xxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of George Sagen Sent: Wednesday, October 05, 2005 9:15 AM To: bpcs-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: [BPCS-L] Removing Soft-Deleted records from BPCS Files Andrew, I don't think there's a right or a wrong way to accomplish your goal, but when I read your post two questions came to mind that would help guide your decision as to which records you hard delete: 1. Some programs allow you to view the soft deleted records as "History". If physically remove them, you'll no longer be able to see them. While for your example of the FMA records this is likely not an issue, you may want to consult with your users. 2. Some long-term trend analysis reports may rely on historical soft deleted records. Good examples would be reports used for building forecasts, sales analysis, and costing analysis that require several months or even years of data if seasonality is involved. If you hard delete them, the reports may suddenly lose a degree of effectiveness. Of course, if the reports only look at old data and not the recent, moving these records to a separate table and even summarizing them first may speed up running the reports as well as the daily transaction processing.
