There are 2 issues being mixed up here. One is maintenance/upgrades on the
product, and one is the right to use the product and in what fashion it may
be used.

The right to use the software is usually sold in a limited manner (ie,
limited to x number of users, sessions, type of system etc. depending on the
contract you signed). The agreement about the right to use the software is
normally not limited by time.

Maintenance gives you the right to upgrade the software to a new version and
right to obtain fixes for the current version. This is usually limited by
time and must be re-purchased every so often (or not).

It doesn't alter the software license agreement (ie, how you can use the
product) simply to stop purchasing maintenance on the product.
