The big problem we have with the Unix based system is the long batch runs. WE have never been able to complete our MRP imp or do Product cost accumes in BPCS on Unix Judy Liberty -----Original Message----- From: Dennis Strobel [mailto:Dennis.Strobel@xxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Thursday, June 26, 2003 12:54 PM To: 'SSA's BPCS ERP System' Subject: RE: Is any one using Oracle Based BPCS ?? I agree with Mitch. I don't know if you intend to run Oracle with BPCS on HP or on Windows NT platform. Our company runs BPCS on HP-UX using Informix DB. We upgraded processors last year, and support for the upgrade was scarce, in the sense that no one was sure how to size the HP servers. We ended up spending considerably more money for UNIX hardware than we would have for iSeries hardware, just to insure that we would have enough processing power. In addition to hardware costs, on non-iSeries platforms you must also purchase the database license separately, whereas on the iSeries it is included. HP-UX is not a strategic platform for SSA GT (although I'm not sure how the recent Baan acquisition plays into their previous statements of direction). As Robert said, SSA GT is 2 releases behind on HP-UX. I can understand how companies may have chosen BPCS on the HP platform years ago, but I don't think that decision today would be a good one. If you want to use BPCS, use the iSeries. Support on that platform is proven and more extensive. If you want to use Oracle DB, my suggestion is to use another ERP package that is better supported on Oracle. I would still suggest considering the iSeries version of the software due to the considerable size of the install base and the rich base of knowledge and support. Not to mention a lower TCO over the life of the use of the application and systems, higher reliability and the availability of a pool of talent with considerable BPCS experience on the AS/400 and iSeries. I am biased as I do sell these products. Mitchell K. Our organization has been on the Oracle based systems for over 5 years. The product is stable and performance is good. The response to any problems or question is outstanding and well as the technical help. Our only concern is that they are now 2 releases behind on the 8.0 product. In order to get the release the 8.2 release; due sometime late this year / early next year, the Oracle community as a group had to let SSA/GT know each of our intentions so that could establish an RIO because of the limited number of clients on the platform. So if being current and wanting new features is a concern then you would either have to be a big enough client for them to do it, pay for it, or get the rest of the Oracle based users to committee with you.
