sales order consuming forecasted order

We are in the process of evaluating the use of forecasted orders to help us on 
long lead time items for one specific customer.  I've searched the archives, 
and I've seen where you there is an order type which consumes the forecast.  
What order type is used on the forecasted order, and what order type is used on 
the actual order?  Do people typically use firm planned orders?  Any 
information on the subject is much appreciated.  TIA.
