I'm just throwing out some wild ideas here, which depends on whatever other software you have in place. If your Word documents were on a company intranet, you ought to be able to create your URLs so they matched up logically with the item numbers. Like if you have an item # ABCDE the URL on that document might be whatever.agrilink.BOM.ABCDE where all the agrilink.BOM connections would be reserved for the BOM documents on the corresponding item #s. You might even be able to have the software that populates the intranet to name the link based on the name of the document which in turn would need to be based on the name of the item. Or perhaps you do not even need an intranet. If all the documents are in a folder that is on a network that is accessible by all your users (we do something similar with quotes), there would be one folder for all BOM documents & each document in there would be named after the item # of the BOM. I not sure if first character allowed to be a number (most of our parts start with a digit) in all pieces of the puzzle, so you might need a leading character. Basically you are setting up a system where the item # you need to access can get you to the document you need from a shared data base. Now there have been plenty postings on midrange_L (check their archives) and other places relating to getting AS/400 reports copied / moved into PC world, from which you can extract the item # that came from BPCS, to match up with your intranet or document folder collection. The only question is really if it is satisfactory to print the BPCS shop paperwork in one pile & the Word Document copies in another pile, both in the same item # sequence, for a human being to match them up into shop packets, or if you need to do a merge operation & have a printer do everything interspersed by item #.
