There used to be a major cost accounting system that was fully integrated 
into BPCS out of Germany.  This was around '94 or '95.  It was called C/S 
Systeme (or something like that).  It was extermely LARGE.  About 3500 files 
plus programs.  And expensive.

The best solution is to use lot control.  This sucks because you now have to 
put a lot number on every inventory transaction.  But, if the controller is 
really decided that this is the way (s)he wants to go, not much choice.

As an accountant and former controller I always question the need for FIFO.  
Unless there is some extremely large tax payoff in your organization, it is 
usually not worth the investment in time or maintenance.
