The system DSN has this same tab as does the user DSN and allows read only access. Typically I always set my DSN's up as system on my NT box. Any DSN can be shared as long as the ODBC drivers on the different machines are compatible. An alternative is to use a DSN-less connection through visual Basic. More recent versions of Microsoft products are all shipped with VBA (visual basic for applications) and should allow a DSN-less connection to be established if desired. This is a little more secure than using a DSN because a person would have to go into the code to make a change. -----Original Message----- From: Paul Holstein [mailto:holstein13@excite.com] Sent: Friday, May 05, 2000 9:21 PM To: BPCS-L@midrange.com Subject: RE: ODBC Security Rick, What you are referring to is called a "User DSN" and as you correctly pointed out, anyone can change it with very little effort. To make things a bit more secure, I would set up a "System DSN" that is shared accross the network and changed only by the system administrator. --Paul Holstein iWork Software, L.L.C.
