Vern,

I think we all know that there are certain things that work better in a
5250 app then a GUI, and we are all confronting those issues in our own
apps.

In this case, here is how I think you could do it in WDSC.

1) RSE supports user actions, so you could define a CHGPF command and then
run it against the list. There is a Change option that I believe will run
CHGPF, but I do not think they have done anything that would let you
specify and apply a parameter to the whole list. I am not sure how you
would do that in a GUI in a generic way.

Another problem with this option is going to be the C/S nature of the app.
I do not think they have any way to send all of those commands to the
server and run them in one shot, so it is going to be a lot of back and
forth.

2) To do a delete. There should be a Select All menu option, usually
Ctrl-A. Then right-click and choose Delete.

Here is just another way to look at this. Which UI would a kid fresh out
of college with no AS/400 experience adapt to quicker? I think there are
always going to be things, like the ones you mentioned, that are going to
seem more natural to those of us with extensive 5250 experience. My hope
is that now that WDSC is out there in the hands of people like us on this
list, some of us will be able to come up with the "inspiration" about how
the GUI could do some of these tasks as well as PDM, and then communicate
those ideas to IBM in a way that they could implement them.

For all the good things we're getting in WDSC, little is said about a
fantastic feature of PDM. This is the ability to apply the same parameter
to actions against multiple objects. I haven't seen anything close to this.
E.g., if I wanted to change all the physical files in a library to
MAXMBRS(*NOMAX), I use F17 to filter down to pf-*, then put a 2 on the
first one, press F13 to repeat to the end, and put MAXMBRS(*NOMAX) on the
command line, press ENTER, and, VOILA!

Is this possible in WDSC? If not, why not? Just look at Windows Explorer
for an example of changing an attribute that is common to multiple files
with one dialog. I.e., select multiple files and right-click one of them.
Things that cannot be changed for all of them are grayed out, and if you,
e.g., check on Read-only, all the files get that attribute. OpsNav, eg.g,
makes you enter the change in separate dialogs for each object - YUK! What
does WDSC do? One at a time? Or a group change? Please do the latter in
WDSC.

Even something like deleting all members in a file is very easy in PDM:
option 4 on the first one, F13, Enter - DONE! 3 strokes. How is this done
in WDSC?

I'm not saying to stay with PDM. I DO say that, things like this need to be
addressed for me to seriously believe a statement like "But according to
IBM and the tools developers who've developed plug-ins to Big Blue's
Eclipse-based WebSphere Development Studio client (WDSc), PDM and SEU no
longer provide the best access to OS/400. "

Just some thoughts

Vern
