Paul Conte had an RPG III pre-compiler that used a form of free format - can't recall if it went beyond calcs. Came out during the run up to the announcement of RPG IV.

Furthermore, didn't someone come out with a pre-compiler called RPG FREE
before RPG became officially free format?

The phrase "RPG free" sounds too much like
"RPG III" and since "RPG free" is not an official name,
you always have to ask for clarification of what it means.

In addition to that, in this day and age of open source and free
software, "RPG free" sounds like it could either be a watered-down
no-additional-cost version of RPG from IBM/Rational, or a third-party
free reimplementation of RPG (potentially for platforms other than the
i).
