Have you done performance comparisons to see if there is any additional
overhead with having so many API calls?

This is a good issue, Aaron. If I ever get enough time to start up the
benchmark website, remind to include some tests of this particular setup.
I, too, would be interested to see the performance: native I/O, embedded
SQL, and abstracted.
