As you said, I've tried explicitly defining the field size (so for a
date, D), but that failed on me as well.

Another reason for that error message could be that the data structure
is defined outside of the SQLRPGLE source member.  For example, if there
is a LIKE(field) SQL often chokes, especially if the "field" is defined
in a /COPY or sometimes in EXTAME(file).

Your best bet is to explicitly define each subfield size (5s0, 11a,
etc.) instead of using any other references.

Although the pre-compiler has improved over the years, it is still an
order of magnitude or two behind the rest of the OS.
