It is true that RPG is pretty much proprietary to the AS/400 and that it
doesn't get to much publicity. But you have to remember what you are
getting. RPG is very tightly integrated into its platform compared to other
languages from my point of view, a good thing.

Is RPG behind? I would have to say NOT AT ALL! What can't you do with RPG?
(I realize that the above statement might be a little overwhelming but I
like to brag about RPG)

You want GUI? You have it with ASNA.
You want web applications? RPG is a great CGI language. Especially if you
already know the basics of RPG.
You want OO like programming? Service Programs, Modules, and sub
procedures.
You want M$? I hope not! ;-) (doesn't really make sense in this context but
I had to fit it in)

Does IBM lag in bringing the latest and greatest to RPG? Sometimes yes.
But that can also be to us programmers benefit. Then we get a product that
is solid and well thought through.

Remember that RPG is constantly in a evolving state. And with surveys going
around like the most recent one where the IBM RPG developers asked us, the
ones in the trenches, what we want RPG to do we can't complain that we have
a bad language.

People will tell you that RPG is dead just because it has been around so
long. But that does not make it a bad language. People want to hear the
latest and greatest buzzword languages' like Java, XML, WML, etc. But what
we have is a well rounded, dare I say it, robust(he he) language.

JMHO,
Aaron Bartell
