Not true.  That is the whole reason for having a "format selector
program".  It is tied to the LF description (not your application
programs) and is called by the system whenever you attempt and add or
update to the multi-format LF.  The format selector program determines
which PF it belongs to and passes back the record format name, and
OS/400 takes care of updating the physical files for you.

You do not need a "format selector program" to *read* multi-format LF
files, since the system already knows from which PF it came.  You do
need one to *add* to the LF.  Of course, if you only add to the PF's,
then you do not need one either.  But this is what you are trying to
avoid or postpone.

If the LF has the same name as the current file used by the program,
and you attach a "format selector program" to the LF, then the
programs can access the LF and still perform adds/updates.
