Actually, they are typically *very* simple programs.  Normally files
with this type of structure have an easy pattern of codes, often a
single specific column, which determines the "record type" and was
used in RPG I-specs to identify the record format and set the record
ID indicators.

The format selector program is analogous to the same type of thing,
but for output instead of input.   Just look at the column(s) which
determine the type using something like a SELECT/WHEN group, and
return the appropriate PF record format name.

They are a slick way of letting your program-described programs
continue to run until you can justify changing them, while allowing
you to properly split the data into separate PF's for new programs or
changing old programs if you happen to be modifying them anyway.

I just don't remember offhand where they were documented...
