My take in this is IBM i stores quite a bit of temp data in /tmp. Blindly deleting everything in that directory could cause some temporary issues with some LPPs. While the OS and LPPs are smart enough to rebuild data structures needed, there might be data in there that is used. For instance many of the “flight recorders “ are in there. Those are useful for diagnosing issues and such.

If you are more selective about what you’re deleting then no harm or foul.

Thanks Jack,

Just interested in your comment about deleting files from /tmp

Why would you say this is a BAD idea ?

While I was not blindly deleting everything I have an enormous number of
files relating to sent emails that I need to delete.

But others on this list have advised they clear /tmp nightly.

So what issue would you suggest this is going to cause ?

Thanks

Right, Gerald.

And if what the OP is trying to do is blindly clean out /tmp *[NOT!! A
Good
Idea NOT!!] *then cd /tmp & rm -rf * would get everything but the
dotfiles.

But I think all he's trying to do is find some specific files somewhere. I
dunno. I've lost track of this conversation. Guess I'll go drink more
coffee 😁
