find /var/tmp -type f fails to do what you want because the primary
argument is a symbolic link.
cd /var/tmp && find -type f will work
find /tmp -type f will work

Very good find! I tested that on Linux and even there, find does *not* follow symlinks! I was not aware about that. :-o
