I think it's probably similar in function to the HAL in windows (Hardware
Abstraction Layer).
Of course now you have the same problem - how do you explain the HAL to
non-geeky types?
Probably easiest to just say "low level system code".

Subject: Explaining what is the LIC
The Licensed Internal Code goes between the hardware and the OS, right?
The purpose being to insulate the OS from the hardware, right?
If I were going to try to explain to some non-geeky type what the LIC is,
how would I describe it?
Firmware?
"all encompassing device driver?"
Neither of those quite get it, I don't think. And I don't think there's an
equivalent "thing" in the Windows world that might help with understanding.
Thanks.
