I think that is a good point. What really are the risks of having a whole
disk subsystem stolen or similarly compromised, that would justify the cost
of acquisition and maintenance of encryption on an entire disk subsystem?
Add to that the compute overhead of encrypting and deciphering virtually
all disk I/O, which is automatic.

It seems to me that a more valid need is for encryption during transport
over the Internet, and the encryption of sensitive data on disk.
