I've a couple responses after reading the articles. Not necessarily directed at storage but at comments in the articles.

As to the LUG one - a good article - near the end it says that if you don't qualify for the LUG, don't be dismayed - what the LUG is concerned with also often applies to smaller shops.

While this is true, it is important to know that IBM have 4 customer advocacy groups that I know of - LUG, CAAC (COMMON Americas Advisory Council), CEAC (COMMON Europe Advisory Council), and the ISV Advisory Council. I have been on CAAC for several years and used to be on the ISV Advisory Council when working at RcJS Software. Both CAAC and CEAC are focused on the SMB shops.

I remember a face-to-face CAAC (I think) meeting a few years ago, where something was presented as plans for the system. It was clear that it probably originated with LUG, and the presenter was very interested to hear the SMB feelings about it - which turned out, in this case, to be different from the very large shops. So IBM do listen to all of the groups.

As to storage - it's not clear to me what "flash" means here - is it only applicable to SAN storage? Or is it a term that also refers to SSDs? So I'm not sure that the article is saying there will be no internal storage.

Anyhow, enough for now - we shall see what the future holds for us.

BTW, members of all the councils are under strict NDAs - sometimes we can share with others in our companies who have a need to know, sometimes we can't even take what we heard out of the room.

Cheers
Vern

The storage options on IBM i seem to be evolving as fast as security topics, to the point where spinning disks will no longer be offered on Power Systems servers, that it will be all flash and tape (a prediction that an IBM executive made to IT Jungle last year<https://www.itjungle.com/2016/11/07/tfh110716-story03/>, and which the LUG confirms has been communicated by IBM to them too).
