Their virtual tape device will probably have a web interface where you can see how much disk space is actually used. For instance, the landing page of our EMC DD2500 lists that across both of our units (the DD2500 and a DD160), we have 82,980.8GB used for our tapes but post compression, they really only consume 4,888.1GB. Data deduplication is really nice on these units. It also shows at a glance on that page the percentage of disk space used on each unit.

There is a reporting feature which we don't find to be extremely useful. It generally reports on things you can see at a glance We'll be writing some Groovy scripts later this year to extract the more detailed information we're looking for and report on it.

Subject: Virtual tape reporting
Importance: Low

Good morning

I am working with a customer that will be using virtual tape backup.

They have specified that the monthly backup will be save indefinitely. After a while, the monthly backup could take up a lot of space.

Is there a reporting tool available to report on the amount of space used by all the tapes for this customer?

Thanks in advance
