Maybe you can put 7.1 on a 6.1 machine (the IBM i machine, not just the
PC)?

IBM i release requirements

IBM® i Access for Windows supports certain versions and releases of the
system.

IBM i Access for Windows 7.1 (5770-XE1) only installs on systems with IBM
i 6.1 or later. If you are installing on a system that does not meet this
criteria, you need to follow the Install, update, or delete IBM i and
related software instructions before you install 5770-XE1.

Also, you might need to upgrade other systems to which your PC connects,
after IBM i Access for Windows has been installed on your PC. IBM only
supports PC connections to systems with IBM i V5R4 and later. If these
systems do not meet this criteria, you need to upgrade the IBM i operating
system on these systems to a supported release by following the Install,
update, or delete IBM i operating system and related software
instructions.
