I'm very likely mischaracterizing it by saying as "direct attach Ethernet
system console". I apologize for that.
I've got a 'new' PC in the rack, sitting on a shelf just above the iSeries.
It's connected to the iSeries via cross-over twisted pair, into the LAN T1
ethernet port on the back of the iSeries. It's functioning as the
Operations Console., and OC is only accessible at that PC. That's the way
the VAR had me set it up some months ago, and it works ok.
I'd like to set up Operations Console so that I can run it from other PCs as
needed, accessible thru the internal network.

that I do not believe that IBM is marketing direct attached system consoles
anymore. They dropped that brick thing. I think new machines do not allow
the direct attach console but limit you to:
- Lan Console
- HMC
- SDMC
Actually "direct attach Ethernet" is pretty much an oxymoron in itself.
If it's an HMC and you try to reload HMC code on a non HMC machine (like
using an old PC for this and repurpose the HMC console for snazzier work)
you're going to shoot yourself in the foot.
If it's a LAN Console, you're most of the way there to hardware physical
independence.
We can no longer get away with LAN console since we use multiple lpars but
it wasn't bad when we did use it. I prefer HMC.

Switch to LAN console or HMC. Never used the latter, but the LAN console
was beautiful. We had three PCs configured as possible consoles, and it
was
a snap for my boss to take over from me right in the middle of a process
(I'm trying to get away from saying "Job", but that, too).
While *any* PC can be a system console (only one at a time, of course),
the
acceptable devices must be configured in SST (it's a security thing).
Probably not a good idea to have just any PC act as a system console,
anyway; you wouldn't want just any user taking it over, would you?

repurpose the PC and swap it for another. That brings up a couple of
questions:
- how do I establish another PC as the system system (direct attach)?
- (better) how can use *any* PC on the network as the system console?
