What is a "direct attach Ethernet system console"? Especially "with a
bright shiny new PC serving as system console"? The reason I am asking is
that I do not believe that IBM is marketing direct attached system
consoles anymore. They dropped that brick thing. I think new machines do
not allow the direct attach console but limit you to:
- Lan Console
- HMC
- SDMC

Actually "direct attach Ethernet" is pretty much an oxymoron in itself.

If it's an HMC and you try to reload HMC code on a non HMC machine (like
using an old PC for this and repurpose the HMC console for snazzier work)
you're going to shoot yourself in the foot.

If it's a LAN Console, you're most of the way there to hardware physical
independence.

We can no longer get away with LAN console since we use multiple lpars but
it wasn't bad when we did use it. I prefer HMC.
