IMHO, the "most" important thing in configuring (sizing) a UPS is to make sure the UPS is oversized! You want to be able to add those extra disk drives (and their controllers) and not have to worry about the UPS. Extra capacity in terms of Watts/Amps/KVA is not wasted-- it shows up as extra run time (IMHO).

Next, you have to inspect the batteries every year or so... more often if they've been asked to carry the load. I have 2 APC units at home-- one for the hifi, one for the computers. After ignoring them for too long, one of them decided to quit. I assumed it was a battery issue-- and it was. I had to work -very- hard to slide out the oozing 'sealed' battery, clean out the crud, and find a new battery.

Other than the batteries not lasting forever, I've had no problems with my APC (1500) units keeping the music and computers running at home. I've had no experience with their larger systems.
