We replace ours every 5-6 years as a matter of course. In fact, our electricians are doing them now - scares me running on bypass (street power) though. Nice pretty new diesel generator out back not hooked up yet.......

We had our UPS serviceman tell us that, yes, the batteries are under
maintenance. And if they fail the service contract will cover them.
However, you want to replace them all after x years anyway. It's penny
wise and pound foolish to wait, as the batteries fail one by one, to
replace them. When you have a few dozen batteries in your UPS that adds
up to a lot of downtime.
