Normally it tells you to switch to Binary. I guess that should be a rule of thumb.

Uh, yes, I suppose binary mode would help.

And you're hardly the first programmer to wonder if his or her talents would be better utilized cleaning out stables. Nor are you likely to be the last. I've felt that way many times.
