I think the slashes are some kind of special character for quotes
in newsgroups - not sure - Chuck will have to translate his
special characters for us sometime - I tend to ignore them for
now. Someare for bold and underline and the like, I think. Chuck?

In text-based NewsGroups [for those familiar, think USENET], and thus typically as implemented for most NewsReaders, the special delimiters such as /italics/ *bold* _underline_ signify what is described by the word between those delimiters. Refreshingly simple, as compared to HTML being viewed in a non-HTML viewer... While probably almost any NewsReader will support HTML, I had always abhorred HTML discussions since I typically used a text-based viewer; i.e. back then, if I had wanted or needed HTML, I would have redirected to or visited a web page for that.

At any rate, I think he is putting it in quotes ("free") to say
it's usually included now with any i box. There is always the
free mySQL that can be run on any Windows box, and that'd
probably get you the same results. There's also an express
version of SQL Server, I think.

Italicized, but effectively the same intent as what most would imply by having quoted the single word.

The DB2 for i SQL runtime is part of the IBM i OS, thus once anyone purchases the OS, they have the SQL at what I would [IMO more accurately] describe as being "at no additional cost." [notice this time I used quotes, as normally I would have used slashes ;-) even though I am effectively quoting myself :-)].

The SQL SELECT that I had given as an example, probably could be issued via at least half a dozen different interfaces for which there would be no additional cost; i.e. having the OS, the use of that SQL SELECT is effectively /free/ as performed by any of the features provided at no cost above that for already having obtained the OS.

OK - I googled for "newsgroup asterisk slash" and got one hit
that includes this comment -

I believe the Usenet de facto standard for illustrating font
styles of bold, underlining, and italics in plain-text newsgroup
posts is to enclose the word or string within asterisks,
underscores, or slashes

So maybe that's what's going on - he's making it italicized.

Hmmm.... written much like I often do; i.e. after some research, just continue the flow, versus going back and rewriting. Maybe I should have read to the end first... but then, I would not have processed the flow as inline responses :-)
