Rob,

If the machine was an LPAR I would have remotely connected to the
HMC and used the partitions console there. This was a standalone machine.
We have converted almost every customer from Twinax to Operations LAN
Console, just because it gives them the ability to connect remotely to the
PC (which is used as the console) and do a SAVE 21 or RCLSTG without having
to come in to their office. In your shop, you are doing the same with the
HMC and using the Console function on the HMC for each partition, which is
fantastic.

If you have i5/OS on a Blade or are using IVM with VIOS, you will
use Operations LAN Console for your PC.

You always upgrade the Operations Console first to the next level of
Client Access (the version you would be going to) and I have never had a
problem with Operations LAN Console (or really direct console either). But
the Direct Console is going away in V7R1, so you might as well convert your
console from Direct to LAN Console now.

Subject: RE: LAN Console upgrade

I'm comfortable with HMC. LAN console I'm a little rusty at. Need to
study if there's a chicken and egg issue about level of Op's console
needed vs level of i, how to upgrade Op's console remotely, etc.
