I could have done the entire upgrade remotely from LAN Console, but
I think the customer always likes to see you on site. Also, just in case
anything does go wrong afterwards it always easier to be on-site to debug. I
was able to start the upgrade to 6.1 this morning from my kitchen (I was
able to check the SRCs that it was doing fine) then left and drove to the
site, when I got to the site (2 hours later), I used the image catalogue to
load and apply the PTFs I had previously loaded onto their machine. Now
comes the best part. They don't do much changing of their applications, so
I backed up their 3 major program libraries to tape last week at V5R4,
brought them back to the office to download and convert on a V6R1 box, saved
their converted libraries on my machine, and have just restored them back to
their machine. So, the time for STROBJCVN which IBM ANZOBJCVN said would
take 10 hours, has finished in 45 minutes (which included the restore).
You have to love remote connectivity and Image Catalogues. Of
course, I was here last week to load the image catalogues and make the
backup of their program library.

I was reading a Pete Massiello post on facebook about doing an upgrade via
lan console. Can't you do the whole upgrade remotely?
On the side I have someone with a new 520 they just installed to migrate
Domino to i from Windows. They are also using lan console. I've got them
on 6.1 with latest ptf's. However when it's time to upgrade to the next
release I'd like to do that entirely remotely. This is why... After
getting some other stuff on it they will be moving it to some concrete
bunker like server center where they normally aren't allowed in. Some big
names use this facility also. The only people on site are armed guards.
We have SNDPTFORD scheduled to run weekly for the cume and all groups.
PWRDWNSYS scheduled once a month with a restart.
Backups, well that's a whole other story...
