I considered giving 'free' licenses to individual developers in hopes
that they would see the value and recommend a corporate purchase
for all users.
What is your rationalle for marketing to developers if the product is intended for all end-users? Just the normal tendency for IT departments to take on gate-keeper roles, to assert themselves in all software decisions? Would you need the internal IT department to be the first line of support? Or are you talking about a developer tool, to begin with?
My rationalle for including a license key database with products - where a session limit and expiration date would be embedded in the license key - would be to formally permit (and limit) use of products according to a marketing strategy. Otherwise, people misunderstand or misinterpret license terms, or don't bother to read them, or don't bother to communicate them, or don't bother to enforce them - it becomes a hassle.
I sometimes wonder how WRKDBF might have fared as a commercial product if Bill Reger had offerred a free download, but also required a license key for any more than one concurrent user?
Nathan.
