depend more on your own execution than anything else.

That seems to be true for all software. And there's no single licensing model that works best for all cases.

Dave indicated that he didn't have the time to work on a full-blown commercial product. Sometimes that hurdle can be overcome by a partnership - enlist the help of other's but keep the product proprietary.

Open-source may be another option, but with open-source licensing individual developers run the risk of losing the IP they worked so hard to create, without any assurance that others will jump into the project and add the necessary value. That's seems to be particularly true if you don't have the time, other resources, and patience to build an open-source community around your product.
