As I think about it, a more relational way to do this would be to simply
have an OWNER_ID, in the Inventory table.
I won't argue the "more relational" bit. Whether duplicating the same
information on every row is relational is an arguable point. It's
technically key information, so I guess you can make that argument. It's
definitely more data especially as the number of transactions per owner
grows. Once again, disk space comes to the rescue of SQL <grin>.
A more problematic point, while not insurmountable, is that the OP posited
that the OWNER file is a separately maintained file which implies that the
inventory process doesn't have access to the owner information.
