Jeff, Stay of our your freezer man, keep those finger warm and moving. ;-) I have my primary console as a HMC and a backup console is twinax. When a cume knocked out our HMC a while back, the twinax console allowed us to complete the IPL while waiting for IBM to come and apply a patch to the HMC. I also use Ops Console for a remote site. But good old MS killed that with a hot fix. Once identified and removed, it worked again. And this is an unmanned site. I wish management had gone for a HMC out there with Ops Con as backup. (We use a serial to Ethernet converter to give my laptop the connection from the office or VPN.) The main thing to do is define your backup console using what ever connection is available to you. I also have a twinax console on my 820 and my 170's. Question: How can I configure my HMC in CA to work with my 520 in CA and my 520 in IL? We are at V5R3M0 and our HMC is way behind on updates. That being said, when I upgraded from V5R3 to V5R4, Ops Console tanked completely. If I had not had a twinax card to where Supportline walked me through the switch to a twinax console, I would have been DOA. And I _did_ the prep work that was supposed to be done to the console prior to attempting the upgrade. Ops Console tanked because IBM "rewrote it from the ground up" (Supportline words) for V5R4 such that it no longer worked via the Belkin USB-to-serial adaptor. Supportline and I did not figure that out until sometime the following week. My IBM BP ran into that same issue when they tried to upgrade to V5R4. AFAIK, ops con direct still will not work via USB-to-serial adaptor. The only twinax tube we have left is just for such an occasion, should it occur again. You'll get that twinax brick and sundries when you pry them out of my cold dead fingers. And that's the only reason for twinax in our shop.
