Hi Mike -

we get this error frequently but had it before and after our 820 to 520
migration. We usually get them with one of our offices runs a large
e-mail send and there are invalid addresses in our database. Not just
undeliverable but malformed (e.g.
"mary@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" - yes this was an actualy
address entered by one of our students)

That's not a malformed email address. That's mary at subdomain/host something at domain comormaybesomething.net

While it's not typical to include a subdomain/host name on the right-hand side of the @, it's certainly allowed. In fact, there can be multiple subdomains. E.g.
mary@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
See http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc2821.txt specifically section 4.1.2 forward-path syntax.
