Dave,

You can set up the tape as switchable.  However, it isn't really just
the tape, you have to switch the IOP which switches everything attached.

In addition, while you are supposed to be able to automatically schedule
a switch, I've never done it that way.  I always manually perform the
vary off, switch, and if needed vary on.

Your BP should be able to help you configure switchable hardware, or you
can download the LPAR validation tool and figure out what needs to be
done yourself.
